HVAC and Refrigeration

Motor control and protection for systems that cycle all day.

Overview

Air handling units, chillers, heat pumps, condensers, and refrigeration systems are built around motors. Each compressor, fan, and pump needs reliable switching and protection, and the control components have to withstand high cycling counts over years of service.

Corven supplies the low voltage components inside HVAC and refrigeration equipment: definite purpose contactors from 20A to 90A at 600V, motor contactors, overload relays, manual starters covering 0.1A to 80A, variable frequency drives from 0.4kW to 185kW, soft starters, and circuit breakers. Our drives include built-in HVAC functions such as PID control, and soft starters limit inrush current and mechanical wear on compressors.

Equipment for HVAC and refridgeration systems includes:
  • Definite purpose contactors from 20A to 90A at 600V, in one to four poles

  • Motor contactors from 6A to 1,000A, with thermal and electronic overload relays

  • Manual motor starters from 0.1A to 80A at 600V

  • Variable frequency drives from 0.4kW to 185kW, with BACnet, EtherNet/IP, CANopen, and Modbus communication options

  • Solid state soft starters

  • Miniature, molded case, air, and enclosed circuit breakers, plus motor-circuit protectors and molded case switches

  • Rotary disconnects

  • Surge protective devices, residual current breakers, and DIN rail fuse holders

  • Low voltage switchboards and panelboards for distribution within HVAC units

  • Push buttons, selector switches, and indicator lights, along with safety contactors and relays

  • Smart energy meters

  • Power factor correction and harmonic filters for large chiller plants

Industry challenges

HVAC and refrigeration manufacturers compete on efficiency, size, and cost, and the components inside the panel affect all three.

  • High cycling endurance requirements on compressor and fan contactors

  • Compact components for space-limited OEM panels

  • Energy efficiency targets that depend on precise motor control

  • Inrush current and mechanical wear on compressors and pumps

  • Long lead times and inconsistent availability

  • Limited technical support for panel design and configuration

Corven works with panel designers to match components to the load, and application engineering support is part of every order.
